Trong số các danh từ, các từ như glasses, shoes, trousers chỉ những đồ vật do hai bộ phận hợp thành, thường dùng ở số nhiều. Muốn nói số lượng cụ thể thì dùng a pair of/(two) pairs of.
2. Wrong: He is one of my best friend.
Right: He is one of my best friends.
Danh từ theo sau one of phải là danh từ đếm được số nhiều.
3. Wrong: Those are some books of our teacher.
Right: Those are some books of our teacher's.
Đã lược bỏ từ books ở sau teacher's. Giới từ of có tác dụng phân tích, chỉ bộ phận của một đồ vật nào đó.
4. Wrong: This is my brother John book.
Right: This is my brother John's book.
John là ngữ đồng vị của brother. Sách của John là John's book.
5. Wrong: The air all around us is men's friend.
Right: The air all around us is man's friend.
man dùng hình thức số ít để chỉ nhân loại.
6. Wrong: This is a good news.
Right: This is a piece of good news.
news là danh từ không đếm được. Muốn nói số lượng cụ thể thì dùng a piece of; (two) pieces of.
a piece of chalk: một viên phấn
a piece of music: một bản nhạc
a piece of advice: một lời khuyên
a piece of cloth: một mảnh vải
a piece of meat: một miếng/lát thịt
7. Wrong: He will go to his sister for dinner.
Right: He will go to his sister's for dinner.
Đã lược bỏ từ house ở sau sister's.
8. Wrong: Please write down your study group's member's names.
Right: Please write down your studygroup's members' names.
Quy tắc về sở hữu của danh từ là thêm 's vào sau danh từ. Nếu gặp trường hợp danh từ ở hình thức số nhiều thì chỉ cần thêm 's.
9. Wrong: He shook hand with me.
Right: He shook hands with me.
shake hands with sb.
10. Wrong: Will you make a friend of me?
Right: Will you make friends with me?
Làm bạn với ai thì dùng hình thức số nhiều của friend.
11. Wrong: Mrs. Smith with her two daughters are waiting at the gate.
Right: Mrs. Smith with her two daughters is waiting at the gate.
Trong câu, Mrs. Smith là chủ ngữ, còn giới từ with chỉ là từ bổ nghĩa cho nó.
12. Wrong: I saw some police standing there.
Right: I saw some policemen standing there.
OR: I saw the police standing there.
police là danh từ tập hợp, được dùng kèm với mạo từ xác định the, theo sau là động từ số nhiều. Khi nói nhiều cảnh sát có thể dùng many policemen.
